Diggin' Downtown!

Ben Comer, Downtown Danville Partnership
Special thanks this week to Dave Simmon for bailing out the president for being the speaker host.  Dave gave his IOU (LOL) and told us about his family and the insurance business that he is co owner of.

Dave introduced Ben Comer, President of the Downtown Danville Partnership.  Ben gave us a overview of how the partnership came into existence, how it is funded, and what some of the things that the partnership does.  Some of the things that you might be familiar with are the First Friday Cruise-ins and the Concerts on the Square.  These are activities are designed to bring people to the Town of Danville and create a quality of life that will attract people and business to Danville.  You can "like" the Downtown Danville Partnership on Facebook.  From their Facebook page you can keep up to date on Concerts and other Downtown events.

Last week, we had a few fellow Rotarians travel overseas to participate in bringing goodwill to local golf courses in Scotland.  While there, they visited a local Rotary Club.  Here is an excerpt from an e-mail about their visit.... and it was nice, I guess they were on their best behavior.

Terry, Doug, Bob - It was good to meet you all, albeit briefly, at our Club meeting.  Hope the rest of your golfing tour went well, though I seem to remember Wednesday's weather was pretty diabolical....!   Attached photo as promised - sorry I'm no David Bailey....

Do look in again if you make a return trip to St Andrews; perhaps we could even manage a wee golf challenge match ?!
Meanwhile our very best wishes to you all,
Robin Alexander
pp Rotary Club of St Andrews Kilrymont

I am sure that Terry and Doug battled it out for the rights to the longest putt while on their trip.  WE will NEVER know the truth, but the stories will continue to grow.  You can get a good dose of Terry and Doug's humor on Aug. 3rd for their trek to Conner Prairie to see Don McLean's American Pie.  You can contact Terry directly for space available on the bus.  Total price is $63, that gets you into the show, a box dinner, and almost front row seats to the show.
Looks like Terry is telling a whooper of a tale...
Announcements:

Board Meeting on Aug. 2nd at Courthouse Grounds at 7:30am

District Governor will be visiting our club on Sept. 27th.

Growing Organically

The title of the blog post speaks to the two main factors of todays meeting.  First, Neal Pearcy gave us the Membership Minute and had Flory talk about how to invite and recruiting new members to our club so we can "Grow".
Second, Kathy Stamper talked to the club and shared with us the history of the Danville Farmers Market and the aspects of "Growing" organic foods on her family farm.  Kathy introduced heirloom tomatoes to the farmers market.  Kathy is currently the Market Master for the market and has been with the market since its inception.
There is still time to order you Danville Rotary shirts.
There is still room on the crazy train that is headded to Conner Prairie on Aug. 4th to see Don McLean's American Pie.
There is a strawberry dipping party this evening at Tracie's house at 7 pm.  Please join us in helping out for the concert on Saturday.  Michael needs someone to help set up at 4 on Saturday and we need shift help from 9 to 10pm.

Fair Time

Meeting was called to order by Michael Williams at our new location at NSSB. Our program was Craig Emsweller, he was introducted by Debbie Konter. Craig represents the Hendricks County Fairgrounds. He is in charge of the social media and website for the Fairgrounds along with renting facilities. Craig gave us a brief update on the events that will be happening at the 4-H fair along with discussing some of the other events that take place at the fairgrounds. He also mentioned a new "Bear" mascot will be appearing at the fair this year and the mascot, aka Craig, is hoping the weather will cooperate for the event.

Other announcements included the concert on the Square for July 21st. Duke Tomatoe is the headliner and Flory was looking for some volunteers for the concert. Dipping for the strawberries/banana was discussed, but no location or time was determined. Watch your email for details.

John McKinney has been in the hospital due to heart problems.  He is currently off the ventilator and is recovering.  His wife Patty said that he is still very sick but making progress.  Please keep him in your prayers.

Anyone wanting to have fun and help the club can join the "Chocolate Dipping Party" at Tracie Shearers Thursday night in preparation for Saturday night Summer Sounds on the Square Rotary Booth. We will be selling once again chocolate covered strawberries and bananas. The party will start at 7:00 p.m. at 337 N. Washington St.

We may not make buckets of money but we get tons of exposure for our club at these events and have gained some recognition and will eventurally gain members because of our outreach to the community.

Let Tracie know if you can make it so she will know how to plan for the evening. If you can sell on Saturday night let Flory know (floryphillips@yahoo.com) so she can put you on the schedule, I know she still needs helpers.

Welcome to NSSB!!!!

It was good to see so many people remember that we were meeting at North Salem State Bank this month.  One could tell who went to Mayberry first.  Either way we were glad to have some more space in the community room at NSSB.

Our new President Greg, kicked off the meeting with recognition for Bob Pearcy for all of this work over the years for the Danville Rotary Club.  Thank you again Bob.

Past President Rex had some human maniquins showing off the Golf shirts that we would like to get on order for Rotarians.  They are $35 each (this includes shipping) and are very stylish.  We will be taking orders for one more week next week.  There will be a sign up sheet going around next week for you to place your order.  There are Golf style shirts for guys or the open collar style for women. For more information, follow this link. Greg is wearing one of the shirts here in this picture.

Greg shared some of the goals for the club during the program portion of the meeting.  These goals include:  4 new members for the year, more than 7 Rotarians attending the District Conference on Oct. 26th, Bring Vocation back into Rotary, and working with the other 3 Rotary Clubs in the county.

Announcements:
The Board of directors approved at the board meeting to cover the cost for registration and one nights stay at the the Union Club at Purdue University for any Rotarians wishing to attend the District Conference.  They also approved to cover the cost of registration for any club members who would like to attend RLI (Rotary Leadership Institute) on AUG. 25th.

There are still spots available for the bus trip to Conner Prairie to see Don McLean's American Pie.  This is a great trip and a great way to get to know some of your fellow Rotarians a little bit better.  You can express your interest or any questions to Terry Kessinger.  Just click on his name to send him an e-mail.

LHC Golf outing on July 10th.

Please sign up for a date to be the program chair.  The list will be going around this week and then weeks will be assigned to each Rotarian.

Have Fun!!!! I know I will.  See you in two weeks.  Greg

New Years Resolutions...

Attention:  Our regular meeting will be held at North Salem State Bank's Community Room at their Old Farm location.  Please remind every Rotarian that you see.

First and foremost, I want to thank each of you for a great turn out for the Year End Celebration.  The evening was full of celebration.  We celebrated a successful Rotary year lead by Rex Dugan.  We were happy to have some of our scholarship winners and their families attending this wonderful night with us.  The club made a presentation of $500 to Shared Blessings for cooking our pork steaks for us.  They also walked away with lots of goodies that we Rotarians donated to the food pantry.  We presented a check for $7996.06 to Sycamore Services from our annual Harold Martin Open Golf Outing.  Rex presented the Lois J Arnold Award to Judge David Coleman and the Presidents Award to Brad Borne for all the work that he has done feeding a hungry crew each week.  Amy and Greg, recognized the Paul Harris Fellows that were in attendance and those that have had perfect attendance.  Greg wanted to make sure that the past leaders of our club were recognized for their had work at laying the foundation that we call the Danville Rotary Club today.  Greg outlined his resolutions for 2012-2013.  The highlights are:  Increase Membership by 4 Net new members, have more than 5 Club Members attend the District Conference in October, make sure that all committees meet at least once per trimester and become a partner with the other 3 clubs in the county

Note:  During our research on Past Presidents, I inadvertently left out Robert "Bob" Pearcy by mistake.  He was club President from 1963 to 1964.  Bob we are so proud of you, please accept our apologies for this error. I am honored to carry on with this newsletter that Bob started may years ago.

We were honored to have District Governor Nancy Madru attend along with Assistant Governor Les Pence and Leota Rutledge.  The Danville Rotary Club achieved $100 per ca pita giving to the Rotary Foundation for 2011-2012.

This week we will be having the first Board Meeting for the new year.  Each of you are encouraged to attend.  If you would like to know more about what is going on, I would encourage you to attend.  If you need a make-up, I would encourage you to attend.  The meeting will be held at Courthouse Grounds on Thursday at 7:30am.

This week we will have a sign-up sheet going around for this coming years program chairs.  Please sign up for your week of "Fame".  One of the Avenues of Service in Rotary is Vocation.  Each of you are encourage to share information about your vocation and how you can help the club and community during your 10 minutes of fame.

Vocational Service

Vocational Service involves club members serving others through their professions and aspiring to high ethical standards. Rotarians, as business leaders, share skills and expertise through their vocations, and they inspire others in the process.

Special thanks to Suzanne, Flory, Ron and Rex for putting on a great New Years Party!
