Sheltering Wings Brian Correll

This week, Flory Phillips gave her 10 minutes of fame.  She introduced Brian Correll.  Brian has traveled the world on mission trips.  He was born in East Africa and spent time in Kenya as a Missionary.  Brian helped us open our eyes to how privileged we are in America.  Brian spent time preaching to locals and was always on the move going to the next town on his mission trips.  A changing moment was when one of the local asked, "What about us?"  Today, there is an advocate for local women and children asking, "What about us?"

Sheltering Wings with its 37 employees and over 200 active volunteers help local women and children that have been in a abusive relationship.  They focus on helping those local people who need the help.  Brian mentioned that 75% of children in an abusive household will become abusers.

The shelter provides education opportunities and rebuilding skills to those who call the shelter home.  Women can spend up to 2 years and often have children with them.  There are support opportunities available.

Pick up your Roses
Tuesday is the day to pick up roses from Steinway Insurance.  You should be able to pick up roses after 12pm Noon.

The Rotary Club would like to thank all the generous folks in Danville who donated items for our annual District Conference auction basket this year. Each year we contribute a basket which showcases what Danville has to offer in the way of food, shopping and entertainment. The funds raised are used by Rotary to improve the world both locally and globally. Each year it gets easier to fill that basket as Danville's downtown district adds new attractions whose owners embrace the spirit of Danville by giving generously. This year the following businesses filled our basket with items and gift certificates worth over $500! Thanks everyone for making Danville a great place to live, work and serve the world. Be adventurous, visit a club.

Do you think about rotary while you are traveling?  Did you know that the Danville Rotary Club had banners to exchange with other clubs?  Frequently, Brad puts out the partition that has a bunch of banners on it.  Where did they come from?  Ask Brad for a banner to exchange.  I did.  Thursday morning I am headed to Savannah, Ga to attend a breakfast club.  You can find their website here.  I have not done make-UPS at many clubs.  I am looking forward to visiting this club.  You are never far from friends.

Very happy to visit the Savannah club this morning.   President Dodie got things rolling at 7:30 am.  David Lagessee was introduced as Chairman of the Rotary Pay It Forward.  They put on with the help of 10 other rotary clubs.  It is called Rotary Play It Forward
It reminds me that there are a lot of talented people in Rotary.

We will be back in the swing of things next week.  Happy Easter!

Son of a Beach

Yes, the editor is on vacation.  However, due to his deep respect for each of you and for Rotary, I press on.  (I am writing this while lounging on the beach.  Pictures included).

Marty gave a readers digest version of his ten minutes of fame.  But really, we wanted to listen to his speaker.  Secretary of State Connie Lawson was our guest.  She talked about her new appointment to the SOS office.  Connie is responsible for voting, business id's, car dealerships and investor protection.  (guess that makes her Rex and Greg's boss...lol).

There are several people who are looking to fill her Senate seat, including our very own Dennis Dawes.

Last week was a Rotary Week.  It started with PETS and the District Conference.  Then last week I visited the Avon Club and the Plainfield Club both on the same day.  Greg Zusan is the President Elect (Pictured below).  One Wednesday morning he was running the show.  The Avon Club does not have a meal and they meet at 7:00am.  You have to love Rotary to make it there on time.  They meet at the Avon Town Hall.

Then off to Plainfield for their lunch meeting.  Charlie Jones was also in attendance.  You have to watch the video of their greeting of Charlie.  You can watch it here.  The program for the Plainfield Rotary was one of their members and his wife.  They taught the club to Polka and other Austrian dances.  The Plainfield Club meets at the Sugar Grove Senior Living Center on Wednesday.  They eat at noon.

While I am lounging on the beach at Tybee Island, Ga.  I will be attending the Downtown Savannah Rotary Club.  They have a breakfast buffet that I hear is real good.  I will take some pictures and blog about what they are doing since I will not be able to attend our regualar meeting.  Toes in the sand!!!!
