Interact Action

Probably one of the best meeting of the Rotary year was last week.  It is always a great meeting because it is fully ran by the Interactors.  Heather Siller, President of the Interactors, had the entire meeting planned out.  There were Interactors stationed at each entrance to escort each Rotarian to lunch.  After going through the lunch line and briefly reliving High School, we gathered in the gym. Heather and her executive team started the meeting.  They proceeded to share with us the service activities that they have done during the year. Notable activities include raising $150 for the Royal Theater and $100 for the Ginger Scott Fund. All of the Interactors introduced themselves and there were Sophomores attending also to see of they would like to become Interactors.  To finish up the meeting the Interactors came up with a very interactive game called "Find the Rotarian".  It involved both Interactors and Rotarians.  Those who completed the game received a cupcake from the Ginny Vornholt kitchen.

This week we will be at Twin Bridges Golf Course for the Harold Martin Open.  Now is the time for one last push to secure a hole sponsor or sign up a team to play.  Registration at 11 along with lunch and the shotgun start at noon.  See you on the course.

Sports Building Strong Kids

This week was about kids. First, the Danville Rotary Club Foundation presented a check for the Boy Scouts Pack #310.  The $750 check will expand on a project that they have planned for the Danville Head Start.  Our donation will be used to purchase larger trees that will provide shade quicker for the kids of head start.   Dee Dee from Head start spoke to the club about the reduced funding from our government from the sequestration. Christy Craig was the representative from the Boy Scouts Pack that came to the meeting to accept the check. Christy shared her passion for helping the Head Start accomplish their goal.  She said that the boys have been planning for weeks and that some boys have created special pet projects that they want to do and are raising separate funds to accomplish.

Our own Amy Elliott was our Key Note speaker.  Amy is the founder of Sports For All Kids.  Sports For All Kids started with $250 donated from 4 different donors.   These humble beginnings have expanded to distribute over $6000 per season.  It all started to help single mothers with the costs associated with youth sports. Over the years, Sports For All Kids has moved from helping with sports gear to financial help with the registration fees associated with these youth programs.   Amy works with the schools to access the needs of the kids who are on free or reduced lunch programs.   This creates the pool from which benefits may be applied.  Sports for all Kids is always in need of help.  If you would like to make a tax deductible contribution, please see Amy.

This week we will be at the High School for our yearly Interact meeting.  Please arrive slightly early and enter through the main entrance.

2013 Farmers Day

Just when you think that the weather would keep people home.  Enter your local Farmer!  They grab weather by the tail and create what they can with the resources that they have on hand.  Gary and Henry make a great team putting together a wonderful afternoon with our local Hero's... Our Farmers.  This year, Don Villwock was our guest speaker.  Don Villwock of Edwardsport, Ind., took office as president of Indiana Farm Bureau and Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance in January 2002. His farming operation produces white corn, soybeans, seed soybeans, and seed wheat.

Villwock served in many capacities with Farm Bureau prior to his election as president, including vice president, District 7 director, Knox County president, State Young Farmer Committee chairman, and Feed Grains Committee chairman. He has served on the Farm Bill Task Force and the Farm Credit Task Force.

Don informed us about the importance of education for the public about where our food comes from.  Some of the education that Don provided to us was that farming today is completely different that it was 30 years ago.  Advancements in seed and process have developed a better product.

Ron, David, and Rex listening to our speaker
Large crowd

There were too many guest to list each of them.  We hosted local farmers, Rotary Interactors, and a former Rotary Interact President.

Helping Sycamore Services help children

Pat Cockrum was our program host today. Having grown up in a large family of 5 brothers and 5 sisters, Pat is able to handle what ever comes his way. He can take whatever our Rotary Club throws his way.  Pat introduced CJ Gregory.

CJ runs Cornerstone Pediatric Rehab, a division of Sycamore.  Cornerstone works with over 200 children per month. Most being treated for some form of genetic disorder. 50 percent of the clients they work with are in Hendricks County. they work with Medicaid insurance companies in the uninsured.  physical therapy occupational therapy and speech therapy as well as nutrition and dietary services are just some of the programs that are available for cornerstone pediatric rehab. With working with children, it's all so important for the trainers to provide services to the parents of those children.

This week we also recognized Ron and Suzanne with their Paul Harris fellowship.  This week we were all so excited have Dave Powell and 2 interactors from high school join us for a meeting this week.  Next week will be farmers day (Jan 31st) followed by Apple with teacher.  You can register for Rotary Leadership Institute by following this link.  Have a great week.

Running Theme

The Double Secret meeting was a success. It was great to break out of our shells and regular seats and have a little fun. If you missed it, then you missed 1) what Rotary is about 2) what makes our club so great 3) that a number of Rotarians joined Rotary for the same reason and 4) that Dave Coleman believes in Extraterrestrials. (Just ask him.)

Neal Pearcy started us out with a Membership Minute that really hits home about what Rotary is and how and why we should spread the word.  The reality is that most of us don't know what to say when we are asked, "What is Rotary?".  Neal will be educating us over the next few months to help us answer these questions.

As we went around the room getting to know our fellow Rotarian better. I see a running theme emerge. Most people joined rotary for some form of business networking reason but became a Rotarian when the witnessed all the good work that is done in our community.  Our club has raised and distributed over 100 thousand dollars to local students in Danville. Most of what we do revolves around serving our community and the students in our community.

Three of our Interact kids joined us for lunch. They were Kelli Snodgrass, Jayden McBride, and James Thorpe.  We also had John Drier from the Plainfield club visit our club again this week. John announced that the Plainfield club will buy breakfast if you help with their cleanup day that is coming up.  Jane Hazelton also visited the club. She is with the Danville Public Library.

The dates for the Naples BBQ event are January 4th and 5th.  Flights leave after Rotary on Thursday and you can have your choice of return flights. Saturday, Sunday or after the Naples club meeting on Tuesday. Rex has room for 3 couples or 5 Rotarians.  I already have a response from one Rotarian that wants to go. Email me and I will let Rex know.

Myself, Michael Williams and maybe Henry are planning to visit the Greencastle Rotary Club on Wednesday since we are not having a meeting this week due to Thanksgiving.  We have room for one more in the truck.  If you would like to join us.... Please e-mail me.

As we round out this Thanksgiving week, I want to say that I am thankful for each of you Rotarians.  You make me proud to be a Rotarian.  I really enjoy seeing each of you each week.  Thank you for making our club great.  Proud to be your President.  Greg

Miller Time

Have you heard of Rotary Direct?  It is Rotary's recurring giving program.  Rotary Direct saves.... Time, Money, and Lives.  Sign up today at www.rotary.org/contribute

The Interactors met Thursday morning.  Michael and I attended.  There were 10 Interactors and Mya Williams.  There are some projects that the Interactors are working on that will need our help.  We will keep you posted.  Four of the Interactors attended our regular meeting today.  They are Sierra Summers, Tara Blackard, Heather Siller, and Shailyn Ennis.  We also had a visiting Rotarian from Plainfield, John Drier.

This week Dennis Dawes was the speaker host.  Dennis introduced Pete Miller after giving his 10 minutes of fame.  Pete was elected as last Tuesday for the position that he took over with the vacancy from Connie Lawson taking over the Secretary of State position.  Pete's position is that he is more effective if he knows the people of the community.  He asked that the community keep him accountable.  Pete worked to cut costs and duplication while working under Mitch Daniels.  You can contact Pete through Dennis Dawes.

Neal and I attended the District 6560 Success Seminar on Saturday.  As always, there were many different clubs in our district represented at the Seminar.  These clubs are all looking to get better.  There were three major portions of the event.  They were: Membership, Foundation Certification for 2013-2014, and Public Relations.  Neal attended the membership portion and I got our Foundation Certification so that our club can qualify for grants during the next Rotary year.

Don't forget that this comings week is a Double Secret Meeting.  It would be best for ALL Rotarians to attend this meeting.  Just a reminder that we will not be having a meeting on Thanksgiving.

Right now it is Sunday and I am in trouble.... Dusti and I play each other in Fantasy Football.  Someone is going to win, and someone is going to lose.  Either way I look at it.... I will be the loser.  This is not good. (Wednesday Fantasy Football update:  Dusti and I tied... all is right with the world).

Good year for Interactors

The meeting was held at the Danville High School Gym with our meal provided by
DCHS cafe. The meeting was called to order by Savannah Mitchell and Justin "Smiley"
Stanley. Savannah and Justin thanked Rotary for making them better people, providing the
club with opportunities to service the community and for the lunches.  The Interactors provided entertainment by having the Group divide into two teams and
name captains. One side was Team Wicker and the other side was Team Gill. We
played Jeopordy with some of the categories consisting of Danville Rotary Trivia, Town
of Danville Trivia, international rotary, etc. it was amazing how many knew the answers
to these questions. It was an entertaining event and in the end, Team Gill claimed the
victory!

Dave Coleman made an announcement that Saturday was a work day and members
who could help would be meeting at 9:00 am at Senior Center.

Michael Williams also announced that he needed more players and volunteers for the
golf outing, which is Thursday, May 17th.

RYLA... Changing Lives

Denise Hole was our program chair.  She introduced Leah Broderick.  Leah was one of our representives from the Danville Community School Corporation.  Students converged on Camp Techumseh in Brookston, IN.  While they were there, the kids worked on team building skills and tolerance.   They learned about not bullying other from Mr. Mojo (Travis Brown).  Leah spoke of lasting relationship that were developed over the weekend.  Leah makes us and her mother, Amy Elliott,  proud of everything that she has accomplished.  The moral of the event was not to take things for granted and charish the relationship that you have.  Leah said that she looks at thing differently at Danville Community High School.

Pick up your Roses
Tuesday is the day to pick up roses from Steinway Insurance.  You should be able to pick up roses after 12pm Noon.

The Rotary Club would like to thank all the generous folks in Danville who donated items for our annual District Conference auction basket this year. Each year we contribute a basket which showcases what Danville has to offer in the way of food, shopping and entertainment. The funds raised are used by Rotary to improve the world both locally and globally. Each year it gets easier to fill that basket as Danville's downtown district adds new attractions whose owners embrace the spirit of Danville by giving generously. This year the following businesses filled our basket with items and gift certificates worth over $500! Thanks everyone for making Danville a great place to live, work and serve the world. K9 and other Acronyms

We welcomed Sheriff Dave Galloway and Officer Love to Rotary this week.  Officer Love is a K9 officer and he brought his pawed partner with him.  The Sheriffs Department has 4 of these dogs.  These animals are highly trained to support the officers and to detect drugs.  Sheriff Galloway also reported that crimes against personal property is on the decline, but internet abuse is up.  Our Rotary Club donated $500 to help offset the costs of training those dogs.

Correction:  We have entered into the last week for our proposed new members.  Colleen Matthews, Jermey VanLue and Carrie Ryland.   They will become members after our next meeting.  They were announced at the Ag day meeting.

Jayson Marksberry again gave us an update on supplies to the tornado victims.

This week is the district conference.  Several board members will be attending and I will try to make regular updates as to what fun we will be having during PETS.   I know you will be on the edge of your seats.

Rotary Ag Day

Editors Note:  I just wanted to thank each of you for taking the time to read our Rotary Blog.  I hope you enjoy it each week.

Ag Day
Welcome to all Farmers.  We had a good turn out at the Ellis Park Train Station for Ag Day or Farmers Appreciation.  Some of the Farmers were:  David Whicker, Phillys Palmer, Jim Loughmiller, JD Mendenhall, Cathy Stamper, Rex Parsons, and Charles and Theresa Brown.  This is not a full list, just the names I was able to remember.  Sorry to leave anyone out.  We were very happy that these folk took the time to share their time with us.  The Danville Rotary Club would like to formally thank all farmers for the work that they do.

Other guests included:  Interactors:  Gary, Lornezo, Gabe, Elliott and Plainfield Rotarian Mike Miller.

Henry Wallis introduced our speaker, Amber Wolfe from AgrAbility.  Amber is a Project Coordinator for them.  AgrAbility is an organization designed to help farmers with disabilities continue farming.  They specialize in Arthritis help.  They will work to keep farmers farming.  They are receiving funding from the USDA now.  50 million battle Arthritis and mostly women are effected.  Amber suggests getting checked out by your doctor if you have problems with your joints not your vet.

Jayson Marksberry and Mike Miller both talked briefly about the tornadoes and destruction in Southern Indiana.  Jayson got the word out to the club last week that he had alread made a relief run to Henrysville there weekend before.  Jayson let us know what supplies are still needed and that he was collecting those donations with the help of North Salem State Bank.  (As of Monday at 10am, I am still waiting on word from Jayson for an update on how things went over the weekend.)

Your Chance to Help!
Mike Miller spoke about the opportunity for each club to help on a District Level.  Here is a excerpt from the District Website:

Camp Riley... You can do it!

Rotary and The Riley Hospital have had a long standing partnership.  This partnership started in 1931 when Rotary made a donation to help Riley Hospital.

Alana Summers, Indianapolis Rotary Club,  was our guest and brought us up to date on Camp Riley.  Located in Martinsville, Camp Riley works with kids to help them develop goals that will challenge them and support them to learn how to overcome obstacles.  The camp fosters the idea that their disabilities are not a limiting factor for them and for the kids to feel normal.

The Riley Foundation is designed to insure that doctors do not have to cut corners to treat Indiana children.  60% of the children come from homes that are uninsured or under insured.  Children are referred to Riley and most are cancer cases.

Rotary Interactors Justin, Sam and Kaitlyn were our guests last week.  We also have Matt Howrey from NSSB as our guest also.

Pat Cockrum presented our club with a banner from a Rotary club in Brazil.  Him and his wife went to see Fernanada.  They enjoyed their stay and Pat brought back the suggestion that we serve beverages like to do down south.

It was the honor of the Danville Rotary Club to induct 4 of our 5 new members to the club.  Their sponsors were on hand to provide them with their Rotary Pin.  Our new members were:  John McBride, Larraine Smith, Dave Simmon and Fred Cline. Mike Petrunich was not pictured.  Sponsors were:  John Battershell, Jade Gruner and Pat Cockrum.
